History
The Brushy Mountain Baptist Association was organized in 1871 and assembled for the first annual session at Sulpher Springs Church in Alexander County, August 15-17, 1872. The name was chosen from the scenic mountains that stretch across the area and are affectionately called, "The Brushies" by long time residents of Wilkes County.
Baptists had entered this area of the county more than a hundred years before the Brushy Mountain Association was organized. The churches that first formed the Brushy Mountain Bapist Association came from other previously organized associations. The Brushy Mountain Baptist Association was formed from a merger of Lewis Fork and the United Baptist Associations. Many changes have occurred in the 137+ year history of this great association. Methods may have changed, but the message proclaimed remains the same. Currently, there are 38 churches that constitute this association. The Association incorporated in 1999.
